A Review of Work at Home Jobs – Can You Really Earn From It?

Work at home jobs is trending at this time and age. These kinds of jobs are suitable for working students, stay at home parents even young teens who wish to earn their own money and practice their flexibility to balance life and work. There is now a ton of work at home jobs to choose from, not only from small time businesses, but from the big businesses as well.

Before we lay out the companies and work at home jobs, I am going to separate phone and non-phone types of jobs. Non-Phone online jobs are those jobs where you do not need to communicate with clients through phone calls like article writing, link building etc. Work at home jobs that need you to use a phone are customer support, virtual assistant jobs, etc.

Here is a list of popular non-phone kind of online jobs and the companies and websites where you can find an opportunity of the listed job:

Data Entry

Data Entry is a work at home job where you transfer data from a source to another. This job is suitable for people who are new in the online industry and still gaining experience. However, the pay is not enough to consider it as a stable work at home job. This is only good if you need extra money. They can legally do this when you are working as an independent contractor, which is usually the case for data encoders.

Most Data Encoders earn about $15 hourly, however this pay only applies if you work on site, but if you are working from home, the job does not really pay much at all. You will be given a set of data, either a hard copy or from a screen, and then typing it on a spreadsheet or into another form or file type.

To excel in this kind of job, you have to be a very fast, yet an accurate typist who is comfortable in repetition. Your typing skills will be tested before they can hire you. You can use Typing Web as a tool for practice. You only need a computer and a reliable fast internet connection as your equipment for the job.

  • There are 5 signs that a job listing of a company is a scam:

They will claim that you will make a lot of money –  I have already stated that this kind of work at home job cannot be considered as a stable online job. Even a $10 – $15 dollars per hour offer on a work at home job listing makes me a bit skeptical. How much more a job listing with an ad that you can earn as much as hundreds of dollars each week? That is definitely one huge red flag.

They will require no skills or skills tests – Scammers will not ask for a comprehensive typing test because they want to lure more applicants online. If they do require some skill sets, it would be very basic skills like typing 25-35 wpm – which most people can do.

They will ask for a fee – It is quite rare where a company would ask a fee for a work at home job. Any job listing that is listed on a page is free. If you encounter a job listing that is asking for a training fee or software fee, then it is most likely to be a scam.

They have no company name and contact information and other information – If you canot find its company name or any contact information, then there might be a big chance that this company does not exists at all.

Their website is poorly designed – Most scammers are too busy escalating their scam to countless of other sites that designing a beautiful website is the last of their priorities.

  • Here are the list of companies who offer a position for this kind of job:

Cass Information Systems  – They offer the positions Data Verification and Data Entry. This position is local-based. The position is listed as “Data Verification Clerk”.  In this company you have to be trained on-site before you can do the job from home.

Transcription

General transcription is a great flexible non-phone work at home job. A transcriptionist or a transcriber’s work is to listen to audio files and typing out what you hear. You can apply to this kind of job with little to know past experience. However, if you opt to be a medical transcriptionist, you will be required to undergo a certain training (usually provided by the company)

Generally, a transcriptionist’s tasks would usually involve listening to personal conversation, business meetings, court hearings, college lectures or any other audio files. To know if you are cut out to be a general transcriptionist, you have to be a great listener, a decent typist and comfortable with using your computer, downloading tons of files and doing research. You also have to be very patient, because sometimes some audio are hard to understand.

A transcriptionist can earn on an average of $10 – $20 per hour, even more to some companies. However there are still companies who gives lower rates, but they hire just anybody, so if you are still starting on this kind of job, they can help you earn more experience as a transcriptionist.

Sometimes as a transcriptionist you are paid per audio. For example, you are offered $50 per audio hour, this means you are paid $50 to decipher a 1 hour audio which will take a lot of your time depending on your skills and experience and the difficulty of the audio. There are also companies who pay $1 per page you transcribed which is pretty much a low ball.

  • The equipments you need as a transcriber

A reliable high-speed internet connection – this is needed to be able to send and receive audio files without a problem.

A foot pedal – Investing in a good foot pedal is a good idea if you really want to venture in this kind of job. This will enable you fast forward, stop, pause and forward audio files with your feet. Your hands now all free to type which will save you a lot of time.

Scribe software – this connects your pedal to your computer.

Headset – Also investing in a quality headset is recommended so you can hear the audio much clearly.

Transcription is not easy as it sounds. Audio files will always vary. Some will be very easy to understand while others would take a great amount of your time. The variety of accents makes it hard not to mention the background noises you will be hearing along with the speaker.

Each company has their own guidelines and style guides which you should all know to be sure that the format of the document you are correcting is formatted correctly.
